When you have decided to take that step for your elderly relative to move them into any one of the many residences maintained by long term care companies, there are many things that you should make sure to find out. You may also find that it will be helpful to bring a family member or a friend along with you so that you can get other forms of input about each facility that you tour.

Before you begin touring residences run by long term care companies, you need to gather information about the different ones that you are interested in. Once you have gathered all of that information, you need to narrow your list down to about one or two that you are really interested in. Then set up an appointment to tour for those facilities run by long term care companies.

 

When you are touring facilities run by long term care companies, you need to make sure that you ask yourself some general questions about the facility. First, you need to ask your self about the location of the long term care facility. Ask yourself is the long term care facility conveniently located to where you live. You also need to ask yourself will it be easy for your family members and friends to get to in order to visit you. You also need to see if there is any public transportation available in the area that you are going to be in. When choosing a residence with long term care companies, you have to make sure that it is not out of the way from where you live so that your family members and friends can come see you from time to time. You also need to make sure that there is public transportation just in case you need to go somewhere and you can rely on a family member or friend to take you.

The second question you need to ask yourself is about the appearance and atmosphere of the residence of long term care companies. While you are touring the long term care facilities, check the different areas of the facility to make sure that it is being taken care of. For instance check the kitchen area and the day room area and make sure that they are clean. You may also want to check the bedroom and make sure that it is clean as well. Also check and see if there is good natural lighting and artificial lighting in the building. Ask yourself how comfortable the temperature of the building is and if there are any unpleasant odors. Once you have completed the tour and you have checked for cleanliness, ask yourself whether or not the facility meets your standards of cleanliness. Depending on your condition, you may also want to check to make sure that the facility is wheelchair and walker friendly. Also check for handrails as well so that you know whether you will have help with walking.

When you are touring residences of long term care companies, you may also want to take a look at the menus that they have. You may also want to check to see what type of activities they have there as well.
